Oregon Coast Day Trip from Portland: Astoria and Cannon Beach
You’ll then visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum, where you and your guide will browse historical exhibits offering interesting information about the region’s many shipwrecks, lighthouses, early European exploration, commercial fishing and the Coast Guard.
You’ll also see different kinds of vessels, both life-size and models, indoors and out on the actual Columbia River, the major river of the Northwest that has been an important route for transportation and commerce.
Afterward, enjoy free time for lunch in Astoria (own expense) before driving south along the coast to Cannon Beach, where you’ll see Haystack Rock, a designated marine sanctuary full of tide pools. Enjoy more free time here to shop, walk along the beach, and explore the shops and art galleries that fill this vibrant, charming town.
On our return, you’ll stop at Camp 18, a historical logging museum that offers a glimpse into the history of Oregon’s important timber industry. You’ll be dropped off at your Portland hotel in the evening.

Fantastic scenery and tour guide. He was AMAZING! Really professional, friendly, educated, flexible and kind. Congratulations for such a great addition to the team. We LOVED the tour, Oregon Coast is so pretty and breathtaking.
An amazing experience with beautiful lanscapes. Even though it was raining, the sights were amazing. Our guide Ed was very friendly and knowledgable and made sure everyone are comfortable. We saw stopped at some view points, walked through the forest in a wonderful and easy to walk trail, spend a lot of time at the beach, and visited some small towns. I highly recommend!
Our tour took in, first Cannon Beach and then Astoria. Led by our energetic guide, Eddie, this was a good tour. No ones' fault but disappointingly we were affected by thick fog from late morning which meant that a key attraction, Haystack Rock, was practically invisible from Cannon Beach and that a visit to the viewing tower in Astoria was curtailed because of the poor viewing conditions. Before the fog really developed we had some atmospheric views over Cannon Beach from Chapman Point and later in the day we visited the Maritime Museum which was really interesting, particularly the material about the Bar at the point where the Columbia River reaches the sea. Personally I would have welcomed more content about the founding of Astoria and perhaps this could be considered for futuure tours - especially days affected by the fog. But there was much of interest and I'm glad that I took part in the tour.

This is the way to see Astoria and Cannon Beach. The tour was everything we hoped for. The guide was excellent and the time we spent in each place was perfect. My wife and I often comment that we were delighted we booked this tour.
This was a wonderful tour despite the fog on the coast that day. The drive to and from was beautifully scenic with the array of fall colors. Also exciting was the view of both Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens we saw at a lookout. The view of the beach from Ecola Park was mystical with the fog and the rocks of Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach was a treat to walk through and a close up of the fog shrouded Haystack Rock was spectacular and unforgettable! We also got to see the sea otters on the pier in Astoria. In all it was a great trip with great people in the van but particularly outstanding was our guide, Eddie. A more pleasant and knowledgeable guide would be hard to find. He helped make this a very memorable day. I would recommend this for everyone.
