As Europe’s best-known active volcano, Vesuvius gained notoriety for the destruction of the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. See the scars of ancient lava flows while traveling to the volcano’s foothills, and then hop off your coach to walk to the top. Hiking up to the crater is the best way to experience Vesuvius’ magic, and after 20 minutes of steady-paced walking along soft volcanic ash and pumice stone you’ll hit the top.
Gaze down into the crater and enjoy some free time up on the ridge to soak up the volcanic views, set against the dazzling backdrop of the Bay of Naples. After taking pictures and drinking in the vistas, walk back down the volcano with your guide, and hop back aboard your coach for the short journey to Naples.
Enjoy one of the city’s world-famous pizzas for lunch, and then head south to the ancient city of Pompeii. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pompeii’s archeological site is fascinating to explore with well-preserved fossils and ruins that lay beneath volcanic ash for centuries.
See its sights with your guide, noting where the restaurants, shops and brothels of ancient Pompeii once stood. Marvel at the remains of the Forum and see Teatro Grande – an impressive theater that once sat some 5,000 people. See plaster death casts of the victims, and then hear how they were ‘discovered’ in the 18th century.
After exploring the excavation site, return to your coach and travel back to Rome. Your tour finishes at the start point in the early evening.
Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20, 2017 – March 31, 2018. During this time, the hike is replaced with a walking tour of the National Archaeological Museum of Pompeii. The site is home to an array of relics, excavations and art from Pompeii.

Very impressed by City Wonders - I liked the fact that we had 2 assigned guides for the 50 of us on the coach, both of them contributing helpful and interesting commentary during the day. Our guide, Anna, and the other Group's guide were both superb very friendly and they supplied lots of helpful general information as well as historical background and much more. At Pompeii which we went to 1st we split into 2 smaller groups of 25 to go round each group conducted by a local guide our one was also very good indeed. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole tour - we'd picked this one specially, knowing that in the winter they go to the Museum in Naples instead of up Mt Vesuvius. This made it the perfect combination for us, since we got to see the superb collection of mosaics and artefacts from Pompeii that are now in that Museum we had just over an hour there in the afternoon. Winter was an excellent time to see Pompeii smaller crowds, so our excellent local guide could take his time and there was less chivvying - we got to see a good lot in the 2 hours we had there and no queuing to go into any of the key buildings. We were particularly fortunate as it was a beautiful sunny day albeit very cold and there was an uncommon sprinkling of snow on Mt Vesuvius in the distance, providing a stunning backdrop. Lunch directly after our Pompeii visit was pizza and side salad, plus 1 complimentary drink. I thought this lunch stop - and indeed the 2 other brief 'comfort'/coffee stops - were well organised and efficient.
Tour guide was amazing. The tour was interesting, but there is much more riding the bus than touring Pompeii. We weren't allowed to visit the gift shop at Pompeii, which was a big disappointment. The wine at lunch was old and had turned to vinegar, so I'd order a Coke or something else.
It was a good experience ! Thanks for the good service. Pompeii tour was very impessive ,only the guide was too briefly described. By the way , the lunch in Naples was also not so good .
Great trip. My second time here but first time hiring a tour and I learned so much more along the way. Really got a kick out of climbing Mt. Vesuvius as the last time I was there the weather was uncooperative. I think most anyone can walk at least the lower part, but if you want to make it to the top, it helps if you're in reasonable shape. Friendly, funny, knowledgeable tour guides. Well-paced. Lunch was a bit lame as I am not a fan of soggy Napoli-style pizza, but that takes nothing away from the overall experience. Very well managed tour.
This tour was amazing!
